“I learnt English as a child and lived in the United States for a while. It was an American Literature teacher who recognized me as a writer for the first time, so writing fiction in English became instinctive from that point on. Since “The Missing Spirit” is set in the Stone Age, the narrative doesn’t relate more to one culture or another; it’s a tale about humanity. Furthermore, the idea of reaching a greater number of potential readers by writing in English seemed like a solid positive. Nowadays I live in Brazil again, so it matters that a Portuguese version be available for readers in my country.” — P. J. Maia
